CHS Senior to Take the Field in the SEC this Fall

For the last four years, CHS Senior Analise Powell has been lighting up football fields across the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference (MVAC) as Champion High School Marching Band’s feature twirler. Come fall, she’ll be front and center on the fields of one of the biggest college conferences in the country, the Southeastern Conference (SEC), as one of two feature twirlers for the University of Arkansas! Powell signed her official Letter of Intent with the university on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 in the Pamela S. Hood Auditorium at Champion High School. “I’m very excited,” she said about the moment. “My dream of being a twirler in college has finally come true!”

Powell’s love for all things baton began when she was around five-years-old. She says her mom, Cathy Powell, also a twirler, taught her most everything she knows. Powell has competed at local, national, and world competitions, winning multiple awards at each level. Even though her dream was to twirl in college, it took a little convincing to get her to pursue it. “I really wasn’t looking at the University of Arkansas because it’s 14 hours away from home,” Powell says. “After talking to a friend who twirls there, and visiting, I found I really liked it, so I decided to go ahead and apply.”

Powell says the UA tryout was pretty intense. The process started in the winter when she had to submit a highlight video to the school. From there, a panel of judges selected eight candidates, including Powell, to come for in-person auditions on February 12, 2022. During that all-day audition, Powell had to run a mile in a given time, participate in an interview, perform a routine taught there, and then bring and perform one of her own. 13 years of work paid off when she heard her name called as the one auditioner that would be joining the University of Arkansas Marching Band as a featured twirler for the upcoming season. “I’m really looking forward to meeting new people and being on those big fields,” she says excitedly!

In addition to being Champion’s feature twirler for the last four years, Powell is also a member of the Concert Band and Champion Teens Care. She is receiving both an academic scholarship and feature twirler scholarship from the University of Arkansas. Though she is currently undecided in her major, she says she’s considering exercise science. Congratulations Analise!
