In a sport that boasts one of the highest failure rates, Champion High School senior Nathan Holt has managed to find great success. His biggest accomplishment to date, signing his Letter of Intent to continue his baseball career at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio. Holt put pen to paper on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 in the auditorium of Champion High School, capping off what he calls a weird, yet exciting journey. “It’s a little eye-opening to realize that I’m moving on from high school,” he says. “But at the same time, it is so exciting to know that I get four more years to play a sport I absolutely love, when so many don’t get to.”
Holt’s been playing in baseball diamond dirt for the last 15 years, coming up through local recreational and travel leagues. Playing in college has always been a dream of his, and he says where some find the recruitment process stressful, he rather enjoyed watching his dream become reality. In all, Holt visited four schools: Concordia University, Westminster College, University of Mount Union, and Notre Dame College. Each offered something different for him, but ultimately, Holt says Notre Dame felt most like home. “The campus is a perfect size for me, it reminds me a lot of Champion,” he says. “Also, their coaching staff played a huge role in my decision. [Head coach] Len Barker had an outstanding professional career, so I have a lot of confidence in the program he runs at NDC.”
Holt will start the fall at NDC rotating between third base, hitting, and his true passion - pitching. He will eventually have to narrow his positions down to just two, and though he’ll hate to give something up, Holt realizes that even then, he’s still living his dream. He says, “If it’s your dream, and you want to do it, don’t let anyone stop you… no matter how hard it gets, keep going.”
In addition to his four years of playing baseball for the Flashes, Holt was also a four-year football player, a member of Student Council, and SMASH club. At Notre Dame he says he plans to study business, with the hopes of one day getting into Risk Management. Congratulations Nathan!
