CHS Junior Attends Pearl Harbor Anniversary
Posted on 12/16/2024
A once-in-a-lifetime experience for CHS Junior Catarina Powlish who took part in the ceremony and events for the 83rd anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attacks in Hawaii in early December.

Catarina attended the event through the Young Marines program. During her time in Hawaii she marched in the anniversary parade, attended and assisted at the anniversary ceremony, visited Ford Island museums and battleships, met with three survivors of the Pearl Harbor attacks, and learned more about the Polynesian culture.

Catarina calls the experience "amazing" and says she appreciates learning more about the historic attacks through this unique experience. Catarina has been part of the Young Marines program for more than five years and currently holds the rank of Staff Sergeant. She has attended Junior Leadership School in Tennessee and Senior Leadership School in Ohio. She has also attended the Young Marines Olympics, Winter Encampment, and several campout trips and events. She has received the local Young Marine of the Year award and the David Sawdey Award (for community service, attendance, and appearance.)

The Young Marines program is a national youth program for boys and girls, ages eight through high school graduation, focused on leadership, citizenship through community service, self-discipline, and living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

Thanks for sharing, Catarina!
