In-Person Learning

Good afternoon,

Champion Schools will begin 100% in-person learning the week of March 8th. We will slowly transition to full five-day weeks, so the first couple of weeks we will continue to have Mondays as remote learning days. Over the next few weeks, the district will be moving desks and furniture to prepare for the increased number of students. I will be holding a district town hall meeting on Tuesday, February 23rd at 7:30 PM via Zoom to discuss the transition. The invitation will be sent out Tuesday morning by noon with a link to the Zoom. During the town hall meeting we will be discussing new guidance from the CDC and our health department, new safety measures that will be in place, and other changes that will occur as this transition happens. We are looking forward to getting all of our students back to school very soon. For the families of those students that want to continue 100% remote learning, that opportunity will remain in place for the rest of the school year. I hope to see you all at the town hall meeting on Tuesday night.

 Respectfully,

John Grabowski

Remote to Hybrid Learning Change Letter

January 8, 2021

Dear Parents:

Students that have been doing 100% remote learning with the district may now make the decision to return to our hybrid in-person learning model beginning the week of January 25th. You will need to fill out the “Return to In-Person Learning” Google Form by Friday, January 15th. If you have questions prior to making your decision, please contact the school in which your child attends. You do not need to fill out the form unless you plan to switch your child from 100% remote learning to in-person hybrid learning.

Health and Wellness Update

Thursday November 19, 2020

Dear Champion Parents, Staff, and Community Members:

Champion Local School District received notification of one new staff member that tested positive for Covid-19. Currently, we are seeing significant spread of the Covid-19 virus that is affecting students and staff in all three buildings. Because of this new spread and the number of those in our school community affected we will be moving to 100% remote learning for all buildings effective immediately through November 30. All extracurricular activities and sporting practices will be shut down during this time. We plan to return to our hybrid schedule on Tuesday, December 1.

It is imperative that we double-down over the upcoming holidays to slow the spread of the virus. If you are sick or not feeling well you must stay at home and isolate from others. It is important for all of us to recognize the urgency of the spread of Covid-19 in our local communities. Be vigilant, frequently wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, maintain social distance, wear facial coverings, and avoid gatherings as much as possible.

Sincerely,

John J. Grabowski, Superintendent

Covid 19 Update and CHS Closing Notification Purple background :say Covid 19 Update

Champion Local Schools has received notification of two student positive cases of Covid-19 at Champion High School. Because of the new cases and exposure to a large number of students, Champion High School will be moving to 100% remote learning effective immediately through at least November 23.  All high school extracurricular activities will be cancelled while students are in the remote learning model. This closure is the direct result of outside social gatherings, and the new Covid-19 cases did not originate inside the school. Over the weekend, an event was held for students that was sponsored by parents. Attendees did not follow covid safety guidelines and were not wearing facial coverings at all times when not eating, and they did not maintain social distancing. We have yet to receive seating arrangements and names of all students who attended from the coordinators. If your child attended, they should quarantine and isolate from others until Saturday, November 21. Our Elementary and Middle Schools will remain open on the hybrid schedule, and their extracurricular activities will continue. In order to keep our schools open, each of us must double down on the essential practices to prevent the spread of the virus. These include practicing good hand hygiene, wearing a face covering, social distancing, isolating from others when sick, staying home when asked to quarantine, and most importantly avoid large gatherings. Thank you, and please stay safe!

Update on Covid 19 Rapid Testing purple background says:Covid 19 Rapid testing update

This is John Grabowski, Superintendent of Champion Local Schools Calling

Champion has recently been notified of new student cases of Covid-19 and a new staff case. Contact tracing is commencing and families are being notified. We are now in a position to begin the rapid testing system that we spoke of in the town hall meeting last week. If your child was in close contact with a student or staff member who tested positive, you will be notified and asked if you would like to participate in the rapid testing system. If your child tests negative during rapid testing,  your child will be able to remain in school during the two weeks that a typical quarantine would last. This is NOT mandatory.  All students would be tested four times during that two weeks using a non-invasive nasal swab. If they are negative they go to class and will not be quarantined from school. We have added a parent consent form in FinalForms. You do not need to sign this form now. You may make that decision to participate at a later time if it affects your child.

This rapid testing system is not a substitute for practicing good hand hygiene, wearing a face covering, avoiding large gatherings, and social distancing outside of school.

Thank you, and stay safe.

These posts will be updated each week to reflect the data that Champion Schools will be submitting to the Trumbull County Health Department and will appear each Thursday when the Ohio Coronavirus Dashboard is updated by the Ohio Department of Health.

Superintendent's Message July 7

This is John Grabowski, Superintendent of Champion Local Schools

On Thursday of last week, Governor DeWine released recommendations from the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Department of Education for schools to return in the fall. We have been working on several plans for Champion Schools “Return to Learn.” We used the results of the previous surveys to help with those preliminary plans. We are now working with our stakeholders on finalizing those plans, and we will be able to share them with you in the coming weeks. Please be patient, many of the preliminary guidelines released to the schools were updated and changed as the virus spread began to grow and we need to work to align our plans to those changes.

Our best to all of you during these difficult times, stay safe and we remain Champion Strong!

June 8th Superintendent's Message

This is John Grabowski, Superintendent of Champion Local Schools

I wanted to remind all parents that we will be passing out food to those in need from 12-1 and 6-7 every Tuesday in front of the Elementary school.

The Transportation Survey for next school year will be available on line until Wednesday, June 10th. Please fill out the survey at www.championlocal.org/bus if you have not already done so.

Just a reminder, if you have not turned in your child’s chromebook, hot spot or other items for this school year, you can still drop them off Tuesdays from 12-1 and 6-7 PM in front of the Elementary School. This is the time of year where service and maintenance occurs. If they are not returned in a timely fashion we will be forced to send them out for repair and a fee will be assessed for the service.

I hope you and your family have a relaxing summer, stay safe and we all remain Champion Strong!

This is John Grabowski, Superintendent of Champion Local Schools

I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that we will be passing out food to those in need on Tuesday’s throughout the summer. We will be adjusting the times slightly. Food will be passed out now from 12-1 and 6-7 PM.

Also, we will be sending out a survey this week by email, social media and mail to help us know how many students will need transported by bus next year. No decisions for next year have been finalized. This data will help with the decision making process as guidance becomes available.

Just a reminder, both the Middle School and High School are collecting books and chromebooks this week. Please review the dates and times to drop off your child’s items to the schools. It is very important for chromebooks to be dropped off this week so our staff can begin updating the software and prepare them for next year.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a great night, stay safe and we remain Champion Strong!

The Board of Education has approved the following permanent improvements and curriculum updates for the 2019-2020 school year.

What About Central Elementary and Champion Middle School Properties? tree with green leafs growing

Champion Township Trustees have assumed ownership of 10 of the 13 acres of school board property formerly housing the 100-year-old elementary school. Three of the thirteen acres have been retained by the Board of Education to maintain the school bus garages and school maintenance building. The ten acres were part of the purchase price when the Board purchased 20-plus acres on Mahoning Avenue from the Trustees for the site of the new PK-8 school complex.

The Board of Education continues to own the 29 acres on Alva Avenue. Twenty-two of those acres are leased to the Champion Athletic Club (CAC) for its use as sports fields and parking. The CAC will also mow the remaining 7 acres which house the former Champion Middle School now that the building has been demolished.

This matter is a manufacturer error and all costs are covered by the manufacturer.

Update on Former Central Elementary and Middle School Sites

Now that winter weather has set in, work on the former site of Central Elementary School will wait until spring 2019 when fill will be added, then graded, and grass installed finishing the demolition project and transforming the Central Elementary site into green space.  Champion Middle School work will also wait until spring to have the remains of the school stage removed, followed by grading and grass installation.

There are no plans at this time to alter the use of the CMS property except to turn the school site into green space.  The Board will continue to host the Champion Athletic Club on this property site.

Once the Central site is converted into green space, seven acres of the ten-acre Central parcel will be turned over to the Champion Township Trustees.  Three acres of the property will continue to be owned by the Board to maintain the school bus garage, parking for bus drivers, and driveway access.
